Amidst the bird flu scare across Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Kerala, Delhi, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, in Maharashtra, a total of 19,406 deaths of various birds have been reported in the state from January 8 to January 28.

According to the information received from the Animal Husbandry Department, on January 28, 2021, 142 poultry deaths have occurred in various districts of Maharashtra, including 5 in Jalgaon, 102 in Ahmednagar, 15 in Latur, 6 in Osmanabad and 14 in Amravati. Moreover, the samples were sent to the laboratory of National High-Security Veterinary Institute at Bhopal and laboratory at Pune for testing.

The earlier results of the inspection of the samples were received from the National Institute of Veterinary Safety, Bhopal on 27 January 2021. It found no positive results for bird flu in poultry parties. However, a peacock at Arvi and Hungarga taluka in Nanded district and an owl from Naigaon have been reportedly found positive for the results for bird flu.

Following the confirmation of samples from poultry and duck birds, the area is being declared as a "Controlled Area" and action has been taken to enforce the preventive directives prescribed under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases of Animals Act, 2009. All poultry, eggs, poultry feed and excrement within a radius of 1 km from the poultry farm, which has been found to be positive for bird flu, are to be destroyed. So far, 71,773 chickens, 44,016 eggs and 63,234 kg of food have been destroyed from the affected area.
