A 15-foot Ganesh idol being transported for Ganeshotsav 2026 fell from a trolley near Sheetal Talao in Kurla West on Tuesday evening, September 8, leaving two people with minor injuries and damaging the idol.
The incident occurred when the trolley carrying the idol crossed a speed breaker near Sheetal Talao on LBS Road. The sudden jolt reportedly caused the trolley to lose balance, resulting in the idol toppling onto the road.
According to police and civic officials, the injured were identified as Santosh Jaiswal, 28, and Rohit Jaiswal, 25. Santosh was taken to Kurla Bhabha Hospital, while Rohit was taken to Habib Hospital. Both were treated for minor injuries and later discharged.
Police said the idol, associated with the Om Shakti Mitra Mandal/Om Shakti Foundation Ganesh Mandal from Prem Nagar in Dharavi, was being transported from a workshop in the Ghatkopar area towards its destination in Dharavi.
The trolley was being pulled through the Sheetal Talao area when it encountered the speed breaker. The impact caused the idol to become unstable and fall.
The incident sparked panic and a brief commotion among devotees, residents and people gathered along the route. Police personnel present in the area quickly intervened, managed the crowd and restored order.
Following the accident, organisers coordinated with the police and local administration. Considering the damage to the idol and religious sentiments surrounding the incident, it was subsequently immersed at nearby Sheetal Talao as per ritual.
Officials said there were no fatalities and the injuries sustained in the incident were minor.
The Kurla mishap is the second reported incident this year in Mumbai involving the collapse of a Ganesh idol during an arrival procession.
The latest incident comes around two weeks after a much more serious accident involving the collapse of 27-foot Ganesh idol of Bhuleshwar Cha Raja.
