Owing to the coronavirus pandemic, people from Mumbai along with other parts of Maharashtra have been facing difficulties in procuring essential items such as groceries. With the lockdown in place, people have been directed to maintain social distancing at all times including buying groceries.

In order to ensure distance is maintained, a lot of people are opting for online delivery of grocery. On a daily basis, 20,000 quintals of fruits and vegetables are being delivered to online sales. The government has involved close to 3,000 farmer’s producers' organisations (FPOs) to home deliver 20,000 quintals of groceries to consumers every day.

As per the State Agriculture Department, in 34 districts, 2,830 spots have been dedicated for sales of vegetables and fruits. The move has been introduced by the state agriculture department to ensure that the farmers are able to receive the value for the perishables and the groceries can be delivered to home.

The functioning of several vegetable markets including the wholesale markets along with weekly markets has been disrupted amid the lockdown. As a result, the farmers' unions, farmer’s producers' organisations, institutions, self-help groups have come together to ensure that the sale of essential items remains uninterrupted.

With the help of local authorities, the distributors are provided with groceries at the dedicated spots after they register themselves online. These spots have been decided after a meeting between agriculture department officials, municipal commissioners, collectors, and distributors.

Meanwhile, a mobile application has been rolled out by the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) to ensure home delivery of essentials for the Mira-Bhayander residents. Currently, all the shops in the Mira-Bhayander region have been ordered to shut down.
