The issue of waterlogging is not new to the people of Mumbai. Every year, people have to live with it. . Along with this, the citizens have to be extra cautious while walking as there are various uncovered manholes in the city. While the issue has been raised with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) attention but it got more attention after a doctor fell in one of the manholes and lost his life.

After this incident in 2017, BMC had decided to fix safety nets on a total of 3,500 manholes. Dr Deepak Amrapurkar was only 10 minutes away from his home when he fell in a manhole. He went missing on August 29, 2017, and his dead body was found on August 31, 2017, near the Worli seashore.

The civic body then fixed safety nets on all manholes to prevent any such future mishaps. However, it was recently learned that not all the manholes across the city have been secured with safety nets.

During the investigation, the committee appointed by BMC had made various recommendations. Amongst which, the key recommendation made by the committee was to fix safety nets in all the manholes across the city.

The committee had suggested a special net that would consist of holes to let the water pass into the manholes and asked the civic body to install it 5-6 inches beneath the ground. As per the recommendations received, BMC started the process of covering the manholes. In the first phase, which started soon after the incident, BMC installed safety nets on 1,425 manholes. These safety nets were installed in areas that are known for consistent waterlogging.

After which, the BMC undertook the project to install safety nets at places where the manhole lids have to be removed to avoid waterlogging. Under the project, BMC had installed 2,000 safety nets. In all, there are still a sizeable number of manholes that are still to be covered.
