A total of 2,489 farmers have committed suicide in Maharashtra in the last 11 months from January 1, 2021 to November 31, 2021, an RTI query has revealed.

Meanwhile, a year before, in 2020, 2,547 debt-ridden farmers had committed suicide.

The state revenue department mentioned that despite loan waiver schemes and many other schemes of the government, farmers continue to commit suicide for their inability to repay loans or debt.

As per accounts, region-wise Aurangabad and Nagpur has already seen a spike in suicides compared to last year.

Aurangabad saw 804 suicides in the 11-month period in 2021 compared to 773 in 2020, whereas Nagpur division reported 309 cases as compared to 269.

Meanwhile, Konkan division recorded zero suicides in the last two years.

Vidarbha has always been the worst-hit with almost 50 per cent suicides in the state. Amravati district (331) surpassed Yavatmal (270) as the leading one to record the highest suicides compared to 2020.

Besides, it has also come to light that the government has not bothered to issue fresh guidelines which would benefit the farmers' kin. However, the "Gopinath Munde Accident Insurance scheme" launched on January 1, 2018, which gives INR 2 lakh cover to farmers, does not cover suicides.
