Maharashtra records highest single-day count with over 25,000 COVID-19 cases

Maharashtra has had a much sharper rise in the ongoing current wave compared to the one seen last year. Till February 9, the state had been reporting less than 3,000 cases daily. In 40 days, the surge has taken the state past its previous record.

The number of daily cases in Maharashtra has crossed 25,000-mark in daily cases new cases, which is the highest single-day count since the start of the epidemic.

On Thursday, March 18, Maharashtra reported 25,833 cases and 58 deaths in the last 24 hours, with Nagpur district alone reporting 3,796 new cases of the novel coronavirus.

The previous highest was achieved on September 11 last year, when 24,886 cases were discovered.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, March 17, Maharashtra had reported 23,179 new cases.

A total of 12,764 patients were discharged across the state after recovering from novel coronavirus in the last 24 hours. This brings Maharashtra's tally of recovered patients to 21,75,565. The state's recovery rate now stands at 90.79 per cent and fatality rate is 2.22 per cent.

Meanwhile, Mumbai reported 2,877 new cases and eight deaths. A day earlier, the city had recorded 2,377 cases and eight deaths.

Currently, 8,13,211 people are in home quarantine and 7,079 people are in institutional quarantine across the state.

Besides, high numbers from several states took the national total to close to 40,000 cases as on March 18, a figure that was last achieved on November 28 last year.
