While running in the Mumbai Marathon held on Sunday, 27 people had to be admitted to the hospital while around 28 runners needed medical help. These include leg cramps, dehydration and minor injuries. One of the patients admitted to the hospital underwent urgent angioplasty at the Bombay Hospital after he developed heart problems.
Mumbai Marathon is organised on the third Sunday of January every year. In this year's 20th Mumbai Marathon, citizens of Mumbai and abroad, celebrities, physically challenged youth and old people participated with great joy. A contingent of 600 volunteers including doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and support staff was kept ready by the Asian Heart Institute to ensure timely medical treatment to the runners participating in the Mumbai Marathon. Nearly 62 thousand runners participated in the Mumbai Marathon this year. 18 out of them required medical assistance, while 27 had to be hospitalised.
Of the runners who required medical attention, 55 percent suffered from leg cramps, dehydration, and minor injuries. Cardiologist and Medical Director of Asian Heart Institute, Dr. Santosh Kumar Dora said that among the 27 people who were admitted to the hospital, there were heart attacks, bleeding, severe dehydration, and bone fractures. 15 patients were admitted to Bombay Hospital, 5 to Lilavati Hospital, 2 to Poddar Hospital, 3 to Jaslok Hospital and one patient each to GT Hospital and Saifi Hospital. Dr. Santosh Kumar Dora said that 16 of them were treated and discharged while the condition of all the remaining patients is stable.
Two of the patients admitted to the Bombay Hospital suffered from severe dehydration and fell down and were injured. He is being treated in the intensive care unit and has been put on life support. Similarly, a 48-year-old man was admitted to a Bombay hospital after suddenly experiencing chest pain while running in a marathon. When he was examined, it was realised that an immediate angioplasty was required. Therefore, the Bombay hospital administration informed that the doctor had performed angioplasty on him.
