The Regional Transport Office (RTO) of Andheri, Borivali and Wadala have received 1,512 complaints from commuters on their WhatsApp helpline numbers and email from mid-July to October 15.

Now, based on the complaints, RTOs have started taking action and have suspended 666 permits for passenger refusals, over seating of commuters and rude behaviour of drivers.

In the eastern suburbs recently cracked the whip on errant autorickshaw drivers between Kurla and Mulund-Mankhurd and suspended permits of nearly 400 drivers for 10-15 days for various offences. Wadala RTO stated that they have collected a fine of INR 1,02,500.

The RTOs started special helpline numbers three months ago and pasted them behind most auto rickshaws for commuters to register their complaints, as reining in errant drivers refusing rides had become a challenge.

About the ongoing drive head of Andheri and Borivali RTOs said that they will focus on Bandra, and revisit Andheri and Borivali where there are many complaints.

The RTO also booked 29 autorickshaw drivers for charging excess or demanding fixed fares from commuters. Citizens have complained in the past about drivers refusing to ply and demanding excess fares which are almost double the normal fare for the journey.

The share-auto space has significantly increased in the eastern and western suburbs. There are currently 2.60 lakh auto rickshaws registered in Mumbai RTOs plying in the suburbs. All the railway stations on both east and west have shared auto routes.
