On Saturday, October 5, environmental activists and some tribals were detained as they opposed cutting of over 1000 trees by the Mumbai Metro Railway Corporation Limited (MMRCL) authorities overnight. The case was recently heard in the Supreme Court (SC) where it ruled out that a status quo should be maintained and no more trees should be cut at Aarey until the next hearing.

However, the SC ruled out that the construction work for the Metro 3 (Colaba-Bandra-Seepz) car shed should not be stopped. Meanwhile, the authorities have stated that over 300 trees will be cut in the Metro 2A (D.N. Nagar- Dahisar) site and over 150 will be transplanted.

According to petitioner Zoru Bathena,

The Metro2A line is being built since the last 2 years & is nearing completion. Already several hundred trees were cut to accommodate this line. Now, why a few more hundred trees are required to be cut for the same line, which is nearing completion, is a mystery that only our tree-chopping metro authorities can answer.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has sent an application to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Tree Authority for the same. For Metro 2A, over 30 trees will be cut at Oshiwara, 70 in Dahisar and 56 in Kandivali will be cut.
