BMC spends INR 383 crores on allowance incentives to healthcare workers

Earlier, the BMC revealed that it had spent INR 10.99 crores for handling and disposal of dead bodies of coronavirus patients. More than 11,000 bodies have been handled by the civic body in Mumbai.

The COVID-19 pandemic has added to the stress of an overburdened healthcare workforce. Many doctors, nurses, cleaners, and police officials worked day and night risking their lives for the safety of citizens.

Last year, when the COVID-19 crisis was at its peak, out of the total 1.20 lakhs BMC employees, around 90,000 were on field. As an allowance incentive INR 300 per day was given to the employees, officers, nurses and doctors of the health and other departments.

According to reports submitted before the standing committee, BMC has spent a total of INR 383.87 crores on the allowance of 90,000 municipal employees in a period of seven months, June to December.

Earlier, the BMC revealed that it had spent INR 10.99 crores for handling and disposal of dead bodies of coronavirus patients.

More than 11,000 bodies have been handled by the civic body in Mumbai. The BMC has started an allowance of INR 500 each as an incentive for the employees handling the bodies. The death toll was higher between March and August, however, at that time there was a fear among people, despite, civic body officials worked keeping their life at the stake. No safety was provided to the employees. Later, the civic body decided to started providing insurance cover to their employees along with an incentive for regular employees, contract and salaried employees of the corporation.
