Omicron Scare: 5 more international passengers in Mumbai tested COVID-19 positive

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has now detected five more COVID-19 cases among the international passengers. Of the total, two senior citizens -- a 66-year-old male arrived from London on November 17 and a 69-year-old male who arrived from Portugal on November 25 -- also had tested positive for coronavirus.

On Thursday, December 2, in a statement, the civic body said that they have sent their samples have now been sent for genome sequencing to determine if they are positive for the Omicron variant. Moreover, the patients have been shifted to hospitals and contact tracing of travellers is going on.

The results of genome sequencing are expected to come either by next week.

Other three passengers detected positive on Thursday, December 2, include 45-year-old male who also arrived from London, and a 38-year-old male who arrived from Germany. Meanwhile, a 34-year-old male who arrived from London on November 13 was also detected.

This takes the total number of suspected cases of Omicron in Mumbai to nine.

Meanwhile, BMC also informed airport authorities of updated guidelines for domestic passengers coming to Mumbai from other states, where the local passengers do not need RT-PCR negative results only if they are fully vaccinated.

However, after two cases of Omicron suspected in Karnataka yesterday, Maharashtra Health minister Rajesh Tope said that revised guidelines will be issued soon by the state government.

As on December 2, morning, 861 international passengers were tested with the RT-PCR. Apart from this, a field survey of international passengers who have arrived in the state since November 1, is being undertaken.

An aggregate of 28 samples from both the airport, as well as, field surveillance has been sent for genome sequencing. Of these 28, 25 are international travellers.
