BMC adds 5 new EVs to its fleet

The state government of Maharashtra had recently rolled out its new Electric Vehicle Policy. Following this, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had announced its plans to induct more (EVs) in its fleet and subsequently replace the vehicles that run on petrol or diesel and even CNG. It was also announced that in the first phase, BMC has chalked out plans to procure about 100 vehicles for official purposes and transportation of garbage by the Solid Waste Management (SWM) department.

Automobile manufacturer Tata Motors on Saturday said it has presented electric vehicle, Nexon EV, to the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) as part of the company's tender agreement with EESL.

According to the company, with the initiation of the Maharashtra EV policy, the state is all set to begin a green revolution.

A function was organised to induct these EV into the fleet. As of now, there are five vehicles that have been added. There are steps being taken to add more in the times to come. 

"Environmentally friendly electric vehicles (EVs) are the need of the hour and citizens should make more use of environmentally friendly vehicles and make maximum use of environmentally friendly items in their daily lives," appealed Aaditya Thackeray, Minister of State for Environment.

At the same function, State for Environment Sanjay Bansode, Mayor of Mumbai Kishori Pednekar, Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority MMRDA) Metropolitan Commissioner S. V. R. Dr. Srinivasa, Additional Municipal Commissioner (City) Sanjeev Kumar, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Western Suburbs) Suresh Kakani and Maharashtra Pollution Control Board Chairman Abasaheb Jarhad, Secretary Ashok Shingare, Deputy Commissioner (Solid Waste Management) Dr. Sangeeta Hasnale, Deputy Commissioner (Environment) Sunil Godse, Chief Engineer (Solid Waste Management) Ashok Yamagar and other dignitaries were also present on the occasion.

Tata Motors has said it is driving the adoption of electric mobility vehicles in India. Furthermore, its eMobility ecosystem called the 'Tata uniEVerse' offers a range of solutions supported by the Tata Group companies operating across the country, including Tata Power, Tata Chemicals, Tata Auto Components, Tata Finance, and Croma, in an effort to build a sound EV infrastructure.

Nexon EV was launched in January 2020. It comes equipped with a powerful and high-efficiency AC motor with a 30.2 kWh lithium-ion battery.

Recently an EV station had also been inaugurated in Mumbai. Moreover, this happens to be the first EV charging station in a public parking lot (PPL). According to reports, 20 vehicles have used the EV charging station at Kohinoor building parking lot in Dadar West so far.
