Thane traffic police to auction around 5,000 unattended vehicles

The Thane Traffic Police has now decided to take stern action against unattended vehicles that have been blocking the roads. The traffic department will soon auction 5,000 scrap vehicles from Thane city police area, which are dumped on roads and vacant plots in Thane, Kalyan, Dombivali, Bhiwandi, Ulhasnagar and Ambernath.

As per the order of Thane Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar, the Thane Transport Branch Deputy Commissioner of Police Balasaheb Patil has undertaken a campaign to remove these vehicles.

The traffic police have taken intensified action on 1,369 vehicles for the last 15 days. The Thane city police jurisdiction spotted 1,387 vehicles illegally parked. Of which, 1,369 were alerted by sending a warning notice. In response to it, 945 motorists have removed their vehicles. The transport department has seized 236 vehicles. The registration numbers of the remaining 388 vehicles have been recorded and sent to the Regional Transport Office (RTO). After receiving the addresses of the owners of these vehicles, a notice will be sent to them, said, officials.

If the owners fail to respond within seven days of the warning, a public notice will be issued by the local court announcing the auction. However, even if no response is received even after that, these vehicles will be auctioned. The legal process for this auction is mentioned on the National Informatics Center (NIC) portal.

Out of 1,387 vehicles found unattended, 981 vehicles are in Thane city. Apart from that, 303 vehicles were found in Kalyan-Dombivali city and 41 and 37 vehicles in Ulhasnagar and Ambernath respectively. Of the 388 vehicles sent to the RTO for information, the transport branch has received the information. However, out of these, notices have been sent to the addresses of 29 vehicle owners. The registration numbers of 45 vehicles could not be ascertained.

At the dumping ground at Saket Police Ground, Mumbra, Kalyan, Ulhasnagar and Bhiwandi in Thane, there are 5,000 vehicles seized by the transport department and local municipalities. The process of disposing of these vehicles has also started. 

Moreover, the search for the original owners of the vehicles is underway with the help of the Transport Department by classifying the vehicles seized by the Municipal Corporation and the vehicles seized by the Transport Department. The remaining vehicles will be auctioned off after finding the owners.
