The total number of COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra climbed to 9,915 with the addition of 597 fresh cases on April 29, Wednesday. According to the state health department, the death toll increased to 432 as 32 more deaths were reported on Wednesday.

With the new cases, Maharashtra has close to the 10,000-figure and continues to be the worst-affected state due to coronavirus in the country. Currently, active patients in the state stand at 7,890 whereas 1,593 patients have been discharged or cured of COVID-19.

The health officials also stated that 1,37,159 people have been tested for the virus so far. Of the total cases in the state, 475 cases were recorded in Mumbai, taking the tally of COVID-19 patients in the city to 6,644. As per BMC, the death toll in Mumbai increased to 270 and one of the deceased in Mumbai included BMC inspector, Madhukar Haryan from the civic body's Assessment Department.

The State Health data revealed that out of the 32 casualties, 26 were recorded in Mumbai, three from Pune, and one each from Solapur, Aurangabad, and Panvel. Among the deceased, 25 were men and seven were women. 17 of them were from the 60+ age category and 15 of them belonged to the 40-59 age category. As per the data, among the 32 deceased, 18 of them, i.e. 56 per cent, were suffering from pre-existing conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease.

Meanwhile, the number of cases in the Dharavi slums has gone up to 344 with 14 new COVID-19 cases being recorded on April 29.  Owing to the rise in COVID-19 cases in the slum pockets, the civic body is planning on a cluster containment strategy to deal with the COVID-19 crisis.
