The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has identified a shocking number of unsafe buildings within its jurisdiction following a recent structural survey conducted by the civic body. According to KDMC officials, a total of 676 buildings have been classified under unsafe categories.
Of these, 225 buildings have been declared highly dangerous, while 451 others have been identified as unsafe and in need of urgent attention. The civic administration has issued repair notices to buildings where structural engineers have recommended immediate restoration work.
Residents living in the 225 high-risk buildings have been served notices directing them to vacate the premises immediately. Officials warned that several of these structures are in an extremely critical condition and could collapse at any time, particularly during heavy rainfall in the upcoming monsoon season.
The strict action comes in the wake of last year’s tragic building collapse in Kalyan East, where the dilapidated Saptashrungi building collapsed during maintenance work amid heavy rains, killing seven people. Following the incident, the civic administration has adopted a tougher stance toward structurally unsafe buildings this year.
KDMC Deputy Commissioner Prasad Borkar said the process of evacuating residents from dangerous buildings will begin soon. He added that the municipal corporation has launched a special monsoon safety campaign through its 10 ward offices to shift residents from high-risk structures to safer locations.
“Notices are being issued to residents to vacate the buildings. The administration is on alert to prevent possible accidents during the monsoon,” Borkar told the media.
The civic body has appealed to residents living in dangerous buildings to cooperate with the administration and prioritise their safety.
As part of its broader monsoon preparedness measures, KDMC has also initiated structural audits of buildings that are more than 30 years old.
Officials further stated that strict monitoring of unsafe structures will continue throughout the monsoon season, with evacuation drives, demolition recommendations, and emergency preparedness measures being prioritised across high-risk areas in Kalyan and Dombivli.
