In the last few years, a lot of trees have been hacked to carry out development projects in Mumbai. And this has not gone down well with nature lovers who have been protesting against these projects. Despite opposition, tree hacking still continues in the name of development.
In the beginning of 2018, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to chop down 735 trees and for the same, they had invited suggestions and objections from common people until January 15.
‘Save Tree’ and ‘Save Aarey’ groups, who are fighting against tree felling, are blaming the state government for hacking down trees in the name of development projects. They are of the view that the state knows about the hacking of trees to take place in Aarey for the metro project but instead of stopping it, they are keeping shut.
According to the information provided by Save Tree group member Zoru Bhathena, the tree authority has announced a public notice asking for suggestions and objections to the tree hacking. These 735 trees will be hacked for the road widening project and metro.
The trees which will be hacked belong to Malad, Trombay, Jogeshwari, Andheri, Powai, Vikhroli and other areas.
The sad part is that the government is not supporting us and tree hacking continues. On the other hand, the tree authority is asking for suggestions and objections, even that is not working out."
