Be it a bandobast, politician's visit or any festival, police constables can be seen working round the clock. And this practice started taking a toll on their health. In the last few years, a lot of police constables lost their lives due to the excessive workload.

In order to lessen the work pressure, Deonar police station began working in an 8-hour shift on an experimental basis which improved their standard of living in a positive way. Satisfied with the outcome, Mumbai Police Commissioner Datta Padsalgikar and Mumbai's Joint Commissioner of Police (Law & Order) Deven Bharti gave a green signal for the ongoing experiment and announced that the same will be carried out in other police stations as well.

Eight-hour duty and six-months study

Police-constable Ravi Patil who is associated with Deonar police station researched on working hours of policemen and came to a conclusion that the police can work better and can contribute more to an 8-hour shift.

He submitted his findings to the police commissioner and explained that if police work in an 8-hour shift, then he can stay fit, physically and mentally. He also added that this will help police to carry out their responsibilities efficiently.

This impressed police commissioner Datta Padsalgikar and he took the initiative and started the eight-hour shift duty at Deonar police station.

On the completion of one year, police commissioner announced that the same experiment should be carried out in all stations.
