The catchment areas have been receiving sparse rainfall for the past few days. According to certain reports, the seven lakes currently have a storage capacity of 11.66 lakh litres which is 80.60%. Although it has more water than it did last year, the lack of rain around the lakes has once again raised concerns.

With the city not receiving rainfall for the last few days, the catchment areas too have been deprived of rainfall. The said areas received very little rainfall till July 17 which led to water cuts. However, the subsequent rains led to a significant increase in the water storage in the lakes.

Over the last year, a considerable amount of water reserve has accumulated. Whilst the water levels are rising slowly, due to the water seeping from the soil, there hasn’t been a significant rise in the levels owing to the lack of heavy rainfall in the catchment areas.

Reports state that Mumbai needs to supply 3800 million litres of water per day. When the seven lakes are filled to full capacity, the total water storage stands at 14,47,363 million litres. Naturally, only when the lakes are full can the city receive a full water supply from the BMC.

If reports are to be believed, if there isn’t enough rain in the next few months, water planning will go through turmoil.
