In a shocking incident, a 15-hour-old girl in Palghar district of Maharashtra has tested positive for coronavirus, while her mother tested negative for the infection, a medical officer said.

According to reports, the woman, hailing from Darsheth village, gave birth to the child at a private nursing home in Palghar town on Sunday, May 30.

Following the delivery, both the mother and the child were tested. A day later, when the reports arrived, it was observed that the baby had tested positive for the coronavirus infection, he said on Monday, May 31.

The official claimed this was the first case of a newborn contracting COVID-19 in Palghar district.

Soon after the reports, the child was admitted to a government hospital in Jawhar taluka and her condition was reported to be stable, the officer stated.

Meanwhile, in another incident, more than 8,000 children have contracted the virus in the month of May in Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar district. In addition, experts believe that the third wave may hit Maharashtra and other states in August-September. This wave is expected to impact the children the most.

Besides, Maharashtra, the worst affected state in the country by the coronavirus pandemic, on Monday reported 15,077 cases in 24 hours - lowest in three months. The daily death count has also dropped to a two-month low as the state reported 184 fatalities. 

On Monday, Palghar district reported a total of 1,09,874 COVID-19 cases and 2,066 deaths due to the disease, as per official figures.
