In recent developments, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, addressing the state on Sunday, May 30, stated that even though the state is recording better figures with regards to the COVID-19 pandemic, a third wave of the coronavirus is expected to hit the country in the coming months.

Speaking about the same, he urged the citizens to remain vigilant further adding, "Even though we fought the second wave of the coronavirus well, the challenge remains. To prevent the third wave, you should set a good example for the country by resolving for a COVID-free village,”

Paediatric care amidst COVID-19 third wave

Moreover, advising further caution in order to prevent children from getting infected from the coronavirus, CM Thackeray stated, "The third wave can infect kids. But one should not worry as experts say they have more immunity. But if they get infected, it will be through us. So we have to take care of that." In addition, the state government is reportedly conducting discussions with paediatric experts on how to shield children from the infection. CM Thackeray also added the government will take responsibility for children who lost their parents to the pandemic and will soon release guidelines in this regard.

Black Fungus

With regards to the emerging threat of Mucormycosis, commonly known as Black Fungus, the CM informed that 3,000 such cases have been reported in the state.

COVID-19 vaccination drive

On the vaccination exercise in the state, he said there are six crore people in the 18-44 age group and there are limitations as far as production and availability of vaccines are concerned. "Once we get vaccines, we will increase our capacity. I have been told that we will get it in June," he said.

The death rate has gone down as compared to the first wave," also speaking about the restrictions he added, “We are putting in place restrictions and not a strict lockdown. There are a few districts in Maharashtra where numbers are going high, especially in rural areas. We need to control this,"
