Shiv Sena has started upping its focus on civic issues in Mumbai ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections in 2022. On Jan 7, Mumbai Suburban Guardian Minister and Maharashtra Environment Minister, Aaditya Thackeray reviewed a few pending projects that impact Mumbaikars.

Among the projects reviewed by the Environment Minister was the integrated transport hub (ITH) plan and flood mitigation measures at 386 flooding locations. Thackeray also discussed a new self-sustainable model for the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport or BEST.

The ITH plans to bring together multiple modes of transport under one location. It recommends the linking of inter-state bus terminals with BEST, Metros, and Taxis to provide feasible last-mile connectivity to the commuters. This proposal, if implemented, can reduce the flow of vehicles and result in reduced traffic within Mumbai.

During the meeting, Thackeray also promised immediate relief funds for BEST. A senior civic official said, “A request of around ₹120 crores has been made by the BEST for covering their operational cost, which will be granted from the Covid relief funds. This is apart from the ₹1,000 crore financial aid that is given to the BEST.”

By the end of January, the BMC will reportedly send out tenders to hire a consultant who will conduct a detailed study and offer a long-term business plan for BEST. “We are now looking forward to appointing a consultant to give us a 10-year business plan for BEST to come up with reforms and scope for earning revenue to make it self-sufficient,” Thackeray said on Thursday.

The 386 flooding spots in the region were identified by the BMC and the agency has reportedly sent out 96 tenders to implement mitigation measures for the regions. An official confirmed to HT that work has already begun at some of these locations.

Among other plans outlined by Thackeray for 2021 is the setting up of proper lane markers for roads and pedestrian crossings, footpaths and refuge areas, etc. Further, the BMC is also looking to cut down overhead wiring, ensure footpaths are clear of garbage, clean the sections under flyovers, streetlights, and traffic junctions by adding walkways and art.
