The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is taking action against pigeon coops as pigeon feathers and their droppings pose a health risk to citizens. Also, many people are feeding pigeons despite government orders, and the municipality has now intensified its action against feeding pigeons.
The BMC has taken punitive action against as many as 249 people in a month for feeding pigeons, resulting in a total revenue of INR 1,24,400 in the Municipal Corporation's treasury. This action will continue in the future.
There are 51 pigeon lofts in Mumbai, some of which are 100 to 150 years old. Keeping in mind the dangers posed by pigeons, the civic body was ordered to undertake an immediate campaign to close pigeon coops in Mumbai on July 2 during the monsoon session. Accordingly, the BMC wasted no time in taking action against pigeon houses in Mumbai. Also, from July 3, punitive action was accelerated against those who feed pigeons. A fine of INR 500 is levied on those who feed pigeons. Accordingly, 249 people faced penal action for feeding pigeons in Mumbai between July 13 and August 3. Through this action, the Municipal Corporation succeeded in collecting a fine of INR 1,24,400.
The maximum number of people, 67, were penalised for throwing seeds in a pigeon coop in Dadar. A fine of INR 29,900 was collected from them. Also, as per the court order, a case has been registered at the police station two days ago for feeding pigeons. Not a single punitive action has been taken from the Municipal Corporation's Division M East, Division M West, Division L, Division FN, Division GS, etc. Even though there are 51 pigeon lofts registered with the government, there are many unauthorised pigeon lofts in Mumbai. As a result, the Municipal Corporation is facing obstacles in taking action as not all cases of feeding pigeons are being reported.

Meanwhile, the premises of various pigeon houses in Mumbai are being cleaned. The BMC has taken measures such as prohibiting citizens from throwing seeds, putting up awareness boards, and prohibiting the sale of pigeon food. After the order given in the monsoon session, the Municipal Corporation first took action against the pigeon house in Dadar. This pigeon house has special significance as it has been included in the ancient building preservation category.
