As per the Bombay High Court's directive, Ganesh idols up to six feet tall must be immersed in artificial ponds, while taller idols can be immersed in natural water bodies. In response, Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has expanded its immersion infrastructure by 1.5 times compared to last year. Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao confirmed this increased preparation to ensure smooth celebrations.

A preparatory meeting for the eco-friendly Ganeshotsav 2025 was held at the TMC headquarters under Rao’s chairmanship. The meeting included office-bearers of Ganesh mandals, vendors, civic officials, police representatives, and members from MSEDCL, Torrent Power, and NGOs.

This year, TMC has arranged for:

  • 24 artificial ponds

  • 74 immersion tanks

  • 15 mobile immersion units

  • 9 ghats for natural immersion

  • 10 idol collection centers
This totals 132 immersion points, up from 88 last year.

To avoid crowding, decentralisation has been planned, with additional artificial ponds across city zones. Suggestions from ward- and police-station-level meetings will also be considered for further improvements.

The number of mobile immersion units has been increased to 15 due to the positive response last year. To manage crowds efficiently, manpower will be deployed in two shifts at immersion points. Ganesh mandals and the police have also requested cranes and barges at ghat sites, a proposal under consideration.

To streamline coordination, a WhatsApp group will be created for Ganesh mandals, police, and civic officials. Deputy Commissioner Shankar Patole will serve as the coordination officer. Joint site inspections will be conducted by local police and municipal officers, with follow-up actions by assistant commissioners.

Chief Environmental Officer Manisha Pradhan presented details of court orders and state guidelines for eco-friendly celebrations. She also announced that TMC will soon launch a Green Immersion App to help citizens access immersion details across mobile platforms.

Lastly, various representatives from the Ganesh mandals raised suggestions and issues related to immersion logistics, which were duly noted by the TMC.
