A day after the Maharashtra government imposed a weekend lockdown in Amravati district, the administration imposed a 10-day lockdown in Yavatmal due to a recent spurt in coronavirus cases.

District collector MD Singh said that the number of coronavirus cases in the district has been on a rise since 1 February.

Schools, colleges, coaching classes will remain closed. No religious functions will be allowed during this period. Only 50 persons will be allowed at weddings.

We have decided to conduct around 500 tests per day in Yavatmal, Pandharkawda and Pusad municipal corporations, the collector added.

According to reports, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has held a meeting with administrations of Amravati, Yavatmal and Akola, on the COVID-19 situation there. Moreover, there are talks to that the government may impose a stricter lockdown in Yavatmal, Amravati and Akola cities of the state's Vidarbha region "at any moment".

Maharashtra recorded 5,427 fresh coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, highest daily jump in last 75 days. Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray held a meeting on Thursday, February 18 to take a stock of COVID-19 situation in the state and had urged the citizens to follow the protocols – wearing masks and maintain social distancing.
