On Monday, May 17, Cyclone Tauktae became the strongest tropical storm to skirt across Mumbai in at least five decades.

As a result, Mumbai experienced its wettest-ever day in May, breaking all previous 24-hour rainfall records as the city received 230 mm rainfall. Moreover, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate to intense spells of rain in Mumbai city and suburbs over the next few hours on Tuesday in the aftermath of cyclone Tauktae, the city civic body said.

According to the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) Mumbai centre, the Santacruz observatory (representative of suburbs) recorded 230.3 mm rainfall in the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 am on Tuesday, May 18.

Whereas, the Colaba observatory (representative of south Mumbai) recorded 207.6 mm rain during the same period.

The rain and gusty winds had brought down the minimum and maximum temperatures considerably. Thanks to this, Mumbaikars are experiencing cool weather in the month of May.

The minimum temperature on Tuesday, May 18, dropped by nearly four degrees Celsius compared to Monday. IMD Santacruz recorded 23.6 degrees, which was 3.6 degree below normal. This was also the second-lowest minimum temperature in the past 10 years. Meanwhile, IMD Colaba recorded a low of 25 degrees Celsius. This is the third-lowest temperature recorded in Mumbai in May.

Earlier, on May 8, 2013, a minimum temperature of 23.6 degrees Celsius was recorded in Mumbai.

Moreover, the lowest temperature ever recorded in May was recorded on May 12, 1985, when Mumbai recorded a low of 20.2 degrees Celsius.

Besides, the IMD’s Santacruz observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 31.6 degree Celsius, which was 1.9 degree below normal. This was also the lowest maximum temperature the city had recorded for the month in the past nine years. In 2011, the city had reported its lowest maximum for the month at 31.3 degrees on May 17.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, May 19, IMD forecasts a partially cloudy sky with light to moderate rain/thundershowers in the city and suburbs and the possibility of heavy falls at isolated places. In similar lines, KS Hosalikar tweeted, "Partly Cloudy weather over west coast including Mumbai Thane around. (sic)."

The IMD Santacruz recorded minimum and maximum temperature of 24.4 degree Celsius and 31.6 degree Celsius respectively. However, IMD Colaba recorded a minimum temperature of 26.5 degree Celsius and a maximum temperature of 31.6 degree Celsius.
