The Mahakumbh 2025 in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, is drawing millions of devotees from across India and beyond. However, those planning to attend the grand spiritual gathering are facing steep airfare hikes, with ticket prices on some routes increasing by 500% to 600%. Airlines have responded to the surge in demand by launching direct flights and expanding connectivity to the holy city, but the cost of air travel has left many travelers surprised.
In preparation for the Mahakumbh, airlines such as IndiGo, Akasa Air, and SpiceJet have introduced daily direct flights to Prayagraj. The Prayagraj Airport has expanded its network, adding two new flights to serve a total of 14 destinations. Six new cities, including Mumbai, Kolkata, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Bhubaneswar, and Hyderabad, have been added to the airport’s roster, alongside major hubs like Delhi, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, and Lucknow. This increased connectivity aims to cater to the influx of domestic and international travelers heading to the Mahakumbh.
Despite these new travel options, airfares have skyrocketed during the Mahakumbh season. Tickets for one-way flights from Mumbai to Prayagraj now range from ₹20,000 to ₹30,000. IndiGo and Akasa Air flights are priced between ₹21,000 and ₹28,000, while SpiceJet fares climb to ₹30,000. On specific dates, such as January 23, ticket prices have reportedly exceeded ₹32,000 for a single journey. This is a sharp contrast to the usual fare of ₹5,000 on the same route.
The inflated airfares are expected to continue until February 26, the concluding date of the Mahakumbh. After the event, prices are predicted to return to their normal range. While some travelers have expressed frustration over the high costs, others are willing to pay the premium for an opportunity to attend this sacred event. Airlines have seized the chance to capitalize on the extraordinary demand, offering daily flights to key routes like Mumbai-Prayagraj. For those unable to afford the soaring ticket prices, securing confirmed train tickets remains an uphill battle. The overwhelming demand for travel to Prayagraj highlights the significance of the Mahakumbh, which is held once every 12 years and is considered one of the holiest events in Hindu culture. With millions flocking to the city, the transportation infrastructure has been stretched to its limits.
Although travel costs have surged, the Mahakumbh remains an unparalleled spiritual experience for millions. Many devotees are prioritizing their faith and choosing to bear the financial burden for the chance to take a holy dip in the sacred Sangam.
