An alert motorman of Central Railway saved the life of a person lying on suburban railway tracks on Saturday, May 29.

Motorman PK Ratnakar who was piloting a local train on the Central Railway’s (CR) Harbour line noticed a man lying on the railway track between Tilak Nagar and Chembur railway stations.

While working on a Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT)-Panvel Panvel local (leaving CSMT at 14.12 hrs) on May 29, noticed one person lying on the track. While negotiating to neutral section the speed of the local train was slow between Tilak Nagar- Chembur section. He immediately applied emergency brakes and stopped the train just 10-12 metres before the person on track. Passengers in the train helped him to take away the person to a safe place from the track.

Even after blowing the horns, the person did not move away from the track. Passengers of the local train got down and approached the man, who then got up and ran away towards Chembur railway station.

According to the passengers, the man had possibly come on the railway tracks to kill himself.

In a statement released, Shivaji Sutar, chief public relation officer, CR, said: “The quick thinking by motorman P. K. Ratnakar, averted any untoward mishap. The work done by him is highly commendable. Guard of the local train was also informed to apprise the same to the Control. Due to alertness and timely, prompt action of the motorman saved the life of a person. He will be awarded suitably.”

In a similar incident, Mayur Shelke, a pointsman with Central Railway who was hailed as a hero for risking his own life to save a child at Thane station, continues to earn praises and win everyone’s heart once again.
