On Wednesday, November 10, Maharashtra cleared the proposal of adding nine corporators to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) ahead of the civic body polls in 2022. These new wards will likely be added in the Mumbai suburbs, said civic officials. The members have gone from 277 to 236, and it is unlikely that the wards in the island city will go up.

In western suburbs, they may increase five wards while eastern suburbs will have four wards. The reason cited by the officials is that the island city did not see a rise in population, but the population has gone up in suburbs. However, they could make some readjustment in ward boundaries.

The last time when there was an increment in the number of electoral wards in Mumbai was in 2002. The wards in that year went up from 221 to 227.

The BMC official has said that the average number of voters in each electoral ward right now is around 54,000. However, the number of voters will be close to 51,000 since the seats have gone from 227 to 236. After the civic body will get orders from the Maharashtra government, they will rework on ward boundaries and redraw them accordingly.

The civic body will also put up 20 electronic kiosks where citizens can verify details on voters' list.
