On Wednesday, November 10, the Maharashtra cabinet cleared a proposal to increase the strength of councillors in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) from 227 to 236 members. In the view of growth in population, the civic body has decided to increase nine members in proportion to the voters.

This development comes ahead of the BMC elections scheduled to be held next year in February, which was recently declared by State Election Commissioner (SEC) U P S Madan.

The state government will now issue an ordinance to bring the changes into effect.

Following the decision, the urban development department will make an amendment in the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, 1888, to change the composition of the corporation.

Moreover, reports stated that the civic authority will put up 20 electronic kiosks where citizens will have the opportunity to check their names, address amongst others.

According to reports, the current composition of the civic body has been unchanged since 2001. The state government did not increase the number of corporators in 2011 even when the population rose by 3.87 per cent between since 2001.

However, the 2011 census has been used as the base as the 2021 census has been delayed owing to the coronavirus pandemic.
