Amidst allegations of manipulation in the drawing of ward boundaries for the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Elections 2022, the State Election Commission (SEC) stated that the draft ward boundaries will soon be published, additionally, recommendations and objections will also be sought prior to the approval of the draft, highlighted reports.
According to the SEC, the elections will be scheduled in early February 2022. Several reports quoted U P S Madan the state election commissioner who elaborated on how the draft will be made accessible to the public in nearly two weeks. Citizens will then have the opportunity to send in their recommendations, as well as, objections.
Last week the BJP had filed a complaint at the Election Commission of India (ECI) claiming manipulation in the draft ward boundaries that the BMC had given to the SEC. They have thus asked for a forensic audit of the draft that was sent to the SEC. They also went on to allege that the names of many voters were selectively deleted.
On October 26, the BMC had given their final draft of the updated electoral ward boundaries of the island city’s 227 electoral wards to the SEC. Officials elucidated that once the ward boundaries are finalized, a lottery for the seat reservations will be conducted in late November or early December.
