The Mumbai Police has arrested a garbage collector for allegedly harassing a girl who is 8 years old inside Mumbai’s Sion Hospital, stated reports. The occurrence transpired on Sunday, November 7, now the accused is under police custody.

Additionally, reports cite that statistics from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) highlight that 18,769 FIRs relating to sexual assault on women and minor girls were logged in the state in 2020. Additionally, the number of rape cases against minor girls was greater than that as opposed to women.

Based on accounts, from the 5,570 cases of sexual offences against minor girls, 2,785 were pertaining to rape, whilst 2,699 were of molestation. On the other hand, there were 24 cases of child pornography whilst the rest were related to sexual harassment. Additionally, 2,061 women lodged complaints of rape.

Narratives depict that in less than one per cent of the cases the accused and victims do not know each other. In the majority of the cases, the accused were either family members, friends, or online friends, live-in partners, neighbours, employers. Similarly, Maharashtra has a dismal conviction at 11 per cent when it comes to serious crimes.

When Maharashtra was in the eye of the storm regarding women safety, Shiv Sena had stated that despite rape cases, Mumbai is the safest city for women.
