According to sources, 12,18,880 million litres of water is currently available in all the seven dams across Maharashtra that supply water to Mumbai. For the next ten and a half months, i.e. till June 30, 2022, this water supply will be sufficient.

The Upper Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Madhya Vaitarna, Bhatsa, Vihar and Tulshi dams supply 3,850 million litres of water to Mumbai daily. To quench the thirst of Mumbaikars throughout the year, 14,63,363 million litres of water is required in all seven dams.

Tulsi Lake, which supplies water to Mumbai, started overflowing on July 16 whereas Vihar Lake on July 18. Meanwhile, Modak Sagar and Tansa Lake started overflowing on July 22. If the rains continue in the remaining three lakes, they will soon start overflowing.

Over the last year, a considerable amount of water reserve has accumulated. Whilst the water levels are rising slowly, due to the water seeping from the soil, there hasn’t been a significant rise in the levels owing to the lack of heavy rainfall in the catchment areas.

Reports state that Mumbai needs to supply at least 3,800 million litres of water per day. When the seven lakes are filled to full capacity, the total water storage stands at 14,47,363 million litres. Naturally, only when the lakes are full can the city receive a full water supply from the BMC.
