Mumbai High-Rise Fire Incidents: BMC To Induct Compressed Air Foam Systems For Safety

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is all set to introduce new and modern firefighting technology to strengthen the city's emergency response amid a significant rise in fire incidents in high-rise buildings. 

The advanced firefighting simulator project, covering design, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning, is underway and expected to be completed by April 2026, according to the BMC’s 2026–27 budget, which allocates INR 230.90 crore for the initiatives.

What's new?

• CAFS system – This is a special foam system that quickly extinguishes fires with less water. It will be easier to reach the upper floors in high-rise buildings and the damage caused by water will also be reduced.
• Use of drones – With the help of drones, the fire on the upper floors can be seen immediately. This will help the fire department to take appropriate and quick decisions.

New firefighting vehicles

• Turntable Ladders that can reach heights of 32 meters and 40 meters
• Special vehicles with 24-meters hydraulic platforms
• New fire engines that can throw water up to a height of 250 meters
• 4 support vehicles with high-pressure pumps and lighting for disaster sites are currently under procurement

New fire stations

A new fire station is being built at LBS Road, Kanjurmarg (West). New centres are also set to open at Mumbai Coastal Road (South), Juhu Tara Road, Santacruz (West), Mahul Road (Chembur) and Tilak Nagar.

In addition to this, the BMC will deploy drones to support high-rise firefighting, providing real-time surveillance, fire assessment, and targeted response on upper floors to enhance both precision and firefighter safety.
