Over the last few weeks, Mumbai has seen a rise in COVID-19 cases, however, the officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation have now informed that the spread has now stabilized, as the city has recorded  8,000 and 10,000 cases in the last few days. Furthermore, the number of patients recovering on a daily basis has also gone beyond  10,000.

Meanwhile, the city today has over 3,900 beds which are vacant or available, informed the BMC Commissioner, Iqbal Singh Chahal.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray reviewed the COVID-19 crisis with the officials from the BMC, via an online meeting, whereby Chahal gave the necessary information. He said that the second wave of coronavirus began in Mumbai from February 10, 2021, and more than  85 per cent of cases reported daily, are asymptomatic. Currently, the city has enough beds to treat the patients in need.

Data reveals that the city has a total of 153 COVID-19 hospitals with more 20,000 beds and this will be increased to 22,000 next week.

More than 1000 new ICU beds have been made available from February 10, 2021, and though the number of daily infected patients has now stabilized between 8,000 and 10,000, the number of patients recovering daily has also increased. On the other hand, various hotels in Mumbai are also being made available to relocate patients who are recovering from large private hospitals and the ones who do not need oxygen for their treatment.

Efforts are being made to ensure the availability of Remdesivir for critical cases, whereby officials have confirmed that that there will not be any shortage of other drugs for the treatment. Work orders have been issued to procure two lakh doses of Remedesivir injection, of which, 25,000 units have been received. On the other hand, officials are working towards getting enough oxygen cylinders.

To strengthen this, six coordinating officers have been appointed by the corporation to the Food and Drug Administration who will ensure smooth oxygen supply to hospitals. six oxygen suppliers have been appointed for a total of 24 administrative divisions, i.e., one for each of the 4 divisions in Mumbai, who will be able to provide the same, in case of emergency. Additionally, 350 new ambulances have been added to the fleet in the one week.

Training is also being conducted across 64 nursing homes in Mumbai who are focusing on sharing information about proper and economical use of oxygen.

Auditors have been appointed at 35 hospitals to deal with complaints regarding increased bills levied by private hospitals. Officials have stated that as soon as the bill is prepared, it is audited automatically to ensure no discrepancy. All medical laboratories have been instructed to report coronavirus status within 24 hours. Employees working in the corporate sector should be primarily tested for antigen and if found infected, they should be isolated, post which RT-PCR test should be performed to ensure the virus doesn't spread and affect others.
