The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced 15 per cent water cut across mumbai for 30 days from Friday, March 31. In addition, the water cut will also be applicable to the areas under the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) where the Mumbai civic body supplies water.

This development came as a tunnel carrying water to the water treatment plant at Bhandup Complex got punctured.

The water treatment plant provides about 65% water supply to Mumbai city and the suburbs.

In an official statement, the BMC stated that water to be treated at Bhandup complex is brought through a 5,500mm diametre and 15-km long tunnel.

The tunnel got punctured in Thane due to digging of a borewell and water is leaking on a large scale. It was necessary to isolate the tunnel for repairs and use an alternate transmission system for bringing water to Bhandup, BMC added.

If reports are to be believed, the water storage in the dams that supply water to Mumbai this year has decreased compared to last year despite rains till October.

At the end of October, the dams had 97 per cent water storage. However, currently, 37 per cent of water is left in all the seven lakes that supply water to Mumbai.

Meanwhile, at the same time last year, 40 per cent water reserves were left.

Besides, there is a 15 per cent water cut in several parts of the city, which was imposed on March 27 for 48 hours owing to repair works of the water leakage in two water channels near Mulund .
