The Kalanagar junction improvement project includes construction of flyovers which will connect Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL) and Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC).
As part of the Kalanagar junction improvement project, Bandra skywalk is all set to be dismantled to facilitate construction of a flyover. Notably, the project comprises flyovers connecting Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL) to Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC).
A Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) spokesperson said that the dismantling is inevitable as the portion falls in the alignment of the flyover running from BKC to the sea link and back. This may create an inconvenience for people using the skywalk, especially the 100m portion from Nandadeep Garden to SRA building as it will be inaccessible for a while.
He further said that MMRDA will construct two routes from the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. The route from Bandra-Worli Sea Link to BKC is 780 meters long, whereas the route from BKC to Worli Sea Link will be 720 meters long. In addition, there will be 2 lanes on both the routes as a rescue from traffic jams
Another skywalk in Bandra East originates adjacent to Bandra court and connects the station via Anant Kanekar Marg. The decision to dismantle the skywalk comes days after Bombay High Court gave MMRDA the consent to cut 14 mangroves for a proposed flyover interchange at Kalanagar, Bandra East, after it undertook to plant 10 times the number of trees at Gorai in Borivli West. However, MMRDA also plans to demolish the skywalk at Bandra West on S V Road, as it comes in the alignment of Metro 2B.
Meanwhile, there is heavy traffic congestion on the way from Bandra station or from Bandra West to BKC. However, this flyover will allow passengers to reach BKC early.
