Mumbai: Bandra-Versova sea link will be named after freedom fighter Veer Savarkar

On the occasion of the 140th birth anniversary of freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, 'Swatantryaveer Gaurav Diwas' was celebrated in the state.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced that the upcoming Bandra-Versova Sea link (BVSL) in Mumbai will be named Veer Savarkar in honor of the works of freedom fighter. The Bandra-Versova sea link, which is going to be one of the biggest landmark, will be named as 'Veer Savarkar Setu', as per ANI.

On the occasion of the 140th birth anniversary of freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, 'Swatantrya veer Gaurav Diwas' was celebrated in the state. A cultural program based on the life of Savarkar was organised at Swatantra Veer Savarkar Auditorium, Dadar.

This move is seen as an attempt to woo Maharashtrian voters ahead of the civic body polls and next year's assembly elections.

The Maharashtra government will also institute Swatantryaveer Savarkar Gallantry Awards on the lines of the Central Government’s Gallantry Awards. It will be given to those who show incomparable bravery, Shinde further added.

Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Mumbai City Guardian Minister Deepak Kesarkar, MP Rahul Shewale, MLA Sada Sarvankar, Executive Chairman of Savarkar Memorial Ranjit Savarkar were present among others. Vikas Kharge, Principal Secretary, Cultural Affairs Department, Vibhishan Choure, Director Cultural Affairs and others were present.

Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis thanked the chief minister for the announcement and said he had raised the demand on March 16 this year.

The program was presented by the Directorate of Cultural Affairs, produced by Swadhinta Veer Savarkar Memorial Mumbai and Maharashtra Military School Murbad. 

Shinde said that this is the first time that the birth anniversary of Savarkar is being celebrated in Maharashtra Sadan.
