Mumbai: 123 BEST and Railway employees have succumbed to COVID-19

According to sources, in the last 10 months, 123 employees of the Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) along with the employees of Western and Central Railways in Mumbai have succumbed to the coronavirus.

The transportation service of BEST was operational even during the lockdown due to which the drivers, the carriers along with the staff were working. In addition, the electrical and engineering departments were also working in order to provide essential services due to which many came into contact with this deadly virus.

Moreover, a total of 2,863 people on duty in BEST had tested positive for coronavirus, of which 60 officers and employees died, while 2,739 people recovered. As per reports, the remaining employees are undergoing treatment. So far, BEST has conducted a total of 134 camps and tested the antigen of 9,026 employees, of whom 38 were found to be coronary.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, January 21, 2,886 people tested positive for the novel coronavirus in Maharashtra taking the state's COVID-19 tally to 20,00,878. Currently, there are 45,622 active cases in the state. With 3,980 COVID-19 patients discharged in the day, the number of recovered soared to 19,03,408. However, Mumbai continues to be a major hotspot for COVID-19 with 527 fresh cases recorded in the last 24 hours.

The COVID-19 positivity rate, recovery rate and fatality rate in Maharashtra stand at 14.27 per cent, 95.13 per cent, and 2.53 per cent respectively. Moreover, in the first three days of the COVID-19 vaccination drive in the state, 51,650 health workers have been inoculated.
