A ground plus three-storey building collapsed in Bhiwandi in Thane district during the wee hours of Monday morning. As per reports, 20 people have lost their lives in this incident and almost 20 are still feared to be trapped in the debris. Rescue operations are still going on. Out of the 20 people that succumbed in this incident, 8 were children aged 2 to 14 years. At least 21 people have sustained injuries in this building collapse.

Maharashtra Urban Development Minister Eknath Shinde also announced ex-gratia worth ₹5 lakh for the families of the deceased. Shinde, senior Shiv Sena leader, is also the guardian minister of Thane district. He visited the site of the incident on Monday morning and even the hospital where the injured were being attended. He took a full report of the situation and announced the compensation amount.  

The building collapse happened at 3:40 in the morning on Monday in Bhiwandi. Most of the people were asleep when the incident took place. It is learnt that the building was in a dilapidated condition and it worsened due to the ongoing rains in Mumbai. The building was on the list of dangerous building and notice was issued by the civic body to vacate it.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has expressed grief over the building collapse incident. There were 21 families living in the building.

Even the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home minister Amit Shah and the President Ram Nath Kovind tweeted their condolences and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured in this incident.

Meanwhile, two civic officials have been suspended after the building collapse incident and an offence has been registered against the building owner. It is being said that the building was not in the list of dilapidated structures of the BNMC. There is also An inquiry committee set up under the chairmanship of additional commissioner Omprakash Divte to inquire about the matter.
