Are the railway tracks locations for open defecation? I am not asking this question but pondering on the very sight of Mumbaikars whom I see defecating in open on the railway tracks with mobiles in their hands. Father of our nation, Mahatma Gandhi quoted saying, “Sanitation is more important than independence.”
In order to fulfil that dream, Ministry of drinking water and Sanitation (MDWS) launched the Darwaja Band campaign on 30 May 2017. The initiative has been undertaken to promote the use of toilets and change the mindset of people who defecate in open.
The campaign was rolled in the presence of Narendra Singh Tomar, Union Drinking Water and Sanitation Minister, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Megastar Amitabh Bachchan and other dignitaries. Bollywood’s starlet Anushka Sharma is also an integral part of the campaign and will be seen encouraging women to stand up for the issue in the villages.

Fadnavis thanked the centre for selecting Maharashtra to launch the campaign; he assured that State will be open defecation free by 2018. Fadnavis appreciated Senior Bachchan’s take on the mandate of raising awareness about cleanliness and endorsing the campaign.
