In a welcoming news for Mumbaikars, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced to withdraw its decision to increase water tax.

This development came after the Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Wednesday, November 22, directed the civic administration to not raise the water charges. The proposal for hiking the charges was sent to municipal commissioner and state appointed administrator, Iqbal Singh Chahal last week.

At present, BMC charges INR 6 for every 1,000 litres of water for residential usage and INR 50 for every 1,000 litres of water for commercial and industrial usage.

The BMC's official statement read: "For the upcoming fiscal year 2023-24, the Hydraulic Department had submitted an administrative proposal to increase water charges, keeping in mind the financial balance of water supply. However, chief minister Eknath Shinde, has directed Iqbal Singh Chahal, not to increase water charges this year.”

A total of 3,950 million liters of water is supplied by the civic body to Mumbaikars every day from seven reservoirs Tansa, Upper Vaitrana, Madhya Vaitrana, Modaksagar, Bhatsa, Vihar and Tulsi. The water then undergoes purification treatment and is transported to several pockets of Mumbai. However, Mumbai has a requirement of 4,200 million litres per day (MLD).

Water charges are levied based on various expenditures incurred which includes establishment costs, administrative expenses, electricity charges and disinfectant process.
