Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will soon introduce biometric attendance system for its employees November 1 onwards. The municipal corporation had earlier started the attendance system five months ago and intends to bring the method back for its employees. The decision was made by BMC Commissioner Ajoy Mehta in the recently held BMC monthly meeting.

Earlier, the system was scrapped out after the civic body received several complaints from the employees about the technical snags of the machine. Due to a technical glitch, the salary of 4,500 KEM employees was deducted in March 2018. In response, the hospital staff and the nurses had gone on a strike and had demanded that the attendance system should be shut down.

Therefore, the municipal corporation has decided that in order to avoid the problem, there will be one machine for 20 employees and accordingly, they will have to use the machine. They also have kept a backup machine in order to avoid any future problems.

Alongside, the civic body has also directed the department heads to keep track of the employees’ working hours. The biometric attendance system was introduced in 2017 and had received a lot of opposition from the employees but still, BMC implemented the scheme.
