In order to discourage people from dumping trash on filth-covered railway tracks between Masjid Bunder and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSTM), the Central Railway (CR) has installed nets along the 1.5 km stretch.

Sunil Udasi, Chief Public Relations Officer, CR, informed that the nets were installed a week ago and will be there for a month-long experiment to find out if it can act as a deterrent or not.

He said that many throw trash along the railway tracks from buildings and slums over the compound wall that is constructed along the railway line. He added that the nets have been placed strategically so that the muck-special train will be able to collect the trash on a daily basis.

According to Udasi, since November last year, CR has successfully removed nearly 150,000 cubic metres (m3) of trash (equivalent to 7,500 fully-filled BMC dumper trucks) from railway tracks between CSTM and Sandhurst Road station.

He added that if the project becomes successful, the project will be implemented across 26 slums that run along railway tracks of CR.
