The BJP has stopped the proposal of its own member regarding Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel swimming pool in Kandivali in the BMC standing committee. When the proposal came up for discussion in the standing committee, doubts were raised on expenditure of crores of rupees on the parking space at this sporting facility. The civic administration had to withdraw the proposal after opposition from the BJP members.

The work of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel swimming pool in Kandivali West is stalled from last many years. After requests from local people, BJP’s local corporator Shailja Girkar followed up the issue and demanded that BMC should take up this work and complete it. Accordingly, the BMC administration decided to build the Olympic-level swimming pool, administrative building, audience gallery, gym, etc, at this place. The BMC also put up a proposal to give maintenance of proposed facility to one Seth Construction at the cost of Rs 52 crore.

BJP corporator Prabhakar Shinde raised some points regarding underground parking facility to be provided at this swimming pool location. He stated that BMC should reconsider its proposal to build a parking facility at this location. He stressed that it would help the civic body to save its revenue.

BJP group leader Manoj Kotak asked about the estimated expenditure on swimming pool facilities. He was of the view that it would not be proper to spend Rs 52 crore for parking facility for only 42 vehicles. He demanded that the officer who made this proposal should be probed.

The underground parking space for swimming pool is to be used by only the members of this facility. The underground parking would be 35,000 sq ft. If parking facility is not provided at this swimming pool then public will park their vehicles outside and it will result in inconvenience to local residents, said I.A. Kundan, additional municipal commissioner.
After objections on the proposal, Kundan withdrew the proposal and standing committee approved it. As the proposal is being withdrawn, the swimming pool work is likely to be affected for next few months.
