BMC to present its budget 2020-21 today, here's what to expect

In the financial year 2019-20, BMC presented a budget of ₹30,692 crores. However, no significant changes are liekly to be seen in the budget this year. Of the total ₹30,692 crores, BMC has spent 45 per cent of its budget till December 31, 2019.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) budget for the financial year 2020-21 is all set to be tabled. BMC commissioner Praveen Pardeshi will present his first budget of the richest civic body in the country. This budget is important because after a long time a BMC budget is being presented when there is a Shiv-Sena CM in the state.

In the financial year 2019-20, BMC presented a budget of ₹30,692 crores. However, no significant changes are likely to be seen in the budget this year. Of the total ₹30,692 crores, BMC has spent 45 per cent of its budget till December 31, 2019. 

Budget Estimates 

The budget estimate for the financial year 2020-21 is likely to remain the same as compared to last year. The departments that are likely to face cut in budgetary provision including road and traffic, solid waste management projects (SWM), stormwater drainage (SWD), gardens, water supply projects and other mega projects. 

Change in Spending Ratio

In the previous budget, the BMC allocated ₹550 crores to the bridge department. However, only ₹310 crores were spent until November 2019. 

As per Mumbai’s civic body, ₹1,471 crores were allocated for roads and traffic, ₹825 crores for SWD, ₹239 crores for SWM, ₹1,600 for the coastal road project. 

However, for the past two years, BMC’s spending ratio has been increased. It is expected that efforts will be made to reduce the budget size this year.

 Infrastructure projects 

According to experts, in this budget, BMC is likely to give a push to infrastructure projects. Big-ticket projects such as the Mumbai Coastal Road (INR 12,000 crore) and the Goregaon Mulund Link Road (INR 4,700 crore) and the proposed elevated road connecting Cuffe Parade to Nariman Point may get a push.  Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s has been talking about the elevated road for a while now and it is likely to ease traffic in the area considerably.
