The fire broke out at the City Center Mall in Mumbai's Nagpada area around 9 pm on Thursday. The mall has a large number of mobile and other electronics stores. About 14 fire engines and 17 jumbo tankers were engaged in the fire-fighting operation.

It took firefighters almost 56 hours to douse the fire and it was one of the longest firefighting operations ever.

The fire was brought under control on Saturday, however, the process of cooling the entire building was completed on Sunday. A mobile battery in a shop on the second floor of the mall had caught fire which eventually led to the entire floor being consumed by flames, according to a preliminary investigation. Four firefighters were injured while trying to get this fire in control.

Therefore, after the fire in the mall, it has been decided to inspect the fire fighting system in all the malls in Mumbai. The orders regarding this will be issued soon to the fire brigade centres in the city.

The fire was initially labelled as Level 1 but escalated to Level 5 very soon.

The firefighting system in the city centre mall was not functioning properly. If this system was operational, the fire could have been brought under control in time. However, it has been decided to check the fire fighting system in all the malls in Mumbai to prevent such incidents in other places in future. All fire stations will be notified soon.
