Two people died after a large portion of buildings - Mishra Mansion and Abdul Rehman Building - in Mumbai’s Nagpada collapsed on Thursday afternoon. The firefighters were able to rescue an 11-year-old girl who was trapped under the debris.

However, a 70-year-old man and a 12-year-old girl have lost their lives in the accident. The toilet block of the three-storey building, ground plus two, caved in around 1:00 in the afternoon on Thursday and it was feared that four people are trapped under the debris.

As this happened, the Mumbai fire brigade along with five fire engines, and ambulances rushed to the spot and started the rescue operations. The officials informed that they were able to rescue an 11-year-old girl. However, two persons who were trapped have deceased.

Maharashtra Fisheries Minister Aslam Shaikh has announced an ex-gratia of ₹5 lakh each to the family members of the deceased. Shaikh is also the guardian minister of Mumbai city. The buildings which house 109 families have been evacuated to deter further mishap.

Shaikh reached the spot after receiving information about the incident and said that he would take a decision to provide temporary shelters to the victims after discussing it with Maharashtra Housing Minister Jitendra Awhad.

The minister also instructed the district administration immediately submit a proposal for additional assistance to the families of the deceased from the Chief Minister Relief Fund (CMRF).

The number of building collapse incidents in Mumbai have increased considerably. In July, there was building collapse in the Fort area amid heavy downpour. It was followed by a building collapse in Malad.

Earlier, a portion of the five-storey 'Bhanushali' building near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus area collapsed. Six citizens lost their lives in the incident.
