Amid rising concerns over contaminated water supply across the city, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has directed its water engineering officials to prioritise and resolve such complaints with urgency.

The directive was issued by Additional Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar during a review meeting on Thursday, April 2.

The review meeting was attended by senior officials including Deputy Commissioner (Special Engineering) Purushottam Malavde and Water Engineer Dilip Patil.

It comes at a time when Mumbai is experiencing increased water demand due to summer, along with extensive infrastructure activity.

Officials were instructed to ensure time-bound redressal and strengthen on-ground monitoring systems.

The civic body has maintained that potable water is supplied across Mumbai. Authorities said that water contamination cases must be treated with utmost urgency due to potential public health risks.

Apart from water contamination, it also acknowledged recent complaints of low pressure, and irregular supply in certain areas.

The BMC has directed the immediate deployment of teams to detect and repair faults within the distribution network to address water leakages.

Officials have been instructed to carry out on-ground inspections in areas experiencing low pressure or insufficient supply and to take swift corrective action.

The civic body has also adopted a zero-tolerance stance on water contamination. Authorities have been told to quickly identify contamination sources and initiate round-the-clock remedial work.

Special zone-wise teams will be set up to ensure rapid response, with additional manpower allocated wherever necessary.

Emphasis has been placed on improving coordination across all divisions of the Water Engineering Department, including supply, planning, construction, and maintenance. Engineers have been urged to strengthen communication between subdivisions to prevent delays in project execution.

Senior officials will provide support to resolve project-related challenges; however, the administration has made it clear that negligence will lead to accountability and possible disciplinary action.

The BMC has also raised concerns about ongoing road and infrastructure works that may damage underground water pipelines. Officials have been directed to ensure immediate repairs or install new pipelines wherever required.

A ward-wise assessment of water supply planning is expected to take place soon. Assistant engineers have been assigned the responsibility of submitting updates on ongoing projects within their respective areas.

These measures are intended to ensure a consistent and safe water supply across the city in the months ahead, as authorities work to meet rising demand and maintain service reliability.
