BMC changes its COVID-19 vaccination approach; Allows walk-in for 50% centres in Mumbai

Announcing a change in its approach, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said that from today, June 21, only 50 per cent of vaccinations at the public centres would be through online appointments.

Meanwhile, the rest of the inoculation can allow walk-ins. BMC’s additional commissioner Suresh Kakani said BMC has changed the routine as it was pointed out that there cannot be only walk-in or online days.

Those wanting to take the first Covishield dose can take an online appointment or walk-in, he added.

The city received over one lakh doses of the vaccine on Sunday, June 20, which could give a push to the drive.

In addition, the BMC is mulling over prioritizing vaccination for sections of the population.

The civic body may prioritize people between 18-29 age group who come in contact with many others like vendors, drivers, after deliberation, said Dr Mangala Gomare, BMC’s executive health officer.

Besides, the BMC has started its door to door vaccination program in Mumbai. The permission has been sought from the concerned departments and the campaign is now being run across different societies in the city.
