Nearly half of Mumbai’s population will face a major water supply shortage for as many as 12 days owing to maintenance work carried out the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
The civic body has announced that water supply in Mumbai and its eastern suburbs will be reduced by 10 per cent in 12 municipal wards from January 27 to February 7.
As per officials, the water cut has been imposed to facilitate maintenance work on the pneumatic gate system at the Pise water dam. A pneumatic gate system is a water control mechanism that regulates the flow and level of water in a dam and helps maintain floodwater levels. These gates operate using compressed air to support steel gate panels.
During maintenance, water supply will not run at full capacity, and the pressure will be low to prevent leakage and wastage. Officials have asked residents to use water carefully during this period.
A similar 10 per cent water cut will be implemented in parts of Thane and Bhiwandi.
It is pertinent to note that this is the second such announcement by the BMC this month. Earlier, several areas experienced a 44-hour water cut from January 20 to 22.
